The maintenance cycle of a heat pipe heat exchanger is usually determined by operating hours or the degree of decline in heat exchange efficiency. Taking the HGR-96 model as an example, its design heat transfer area is 96 square meters, and the maintenance focus is on the heat pipe elements and the sealing of the working fluid. Unlike plate heat exchangers, which require periodic disassembly and cleaning of gaskets, heat pipe heat exchangers have no moving parts, and routine maintenance is mainly external inspection. When formulating maintenance plans, procurement personnel can compare the annual maintenance costs of the two types of solutions: a single inspection of a plate heat exchanger involves replacement of sealing gaskets, while the heat pipe type focuses on vacuum degree testing of the heat pipes and cleaning of dust accumulation on the fins.
Steam, heat transfer oil, or electric heating can all serve as the hot-end heat source. During maintenance, the heat source temperature and flow rate need to be recorded so as to calculate whether the heat transfer area meets the current working conditions. If the heat source temperature fluctuates beyond the design range, the working fluid circulation inside the heat pipes may be affected; in this case, the manufacturer should be contacted for review rather than making adjustments on your own. Compared with direct mixing heat exchange solutions, the heat pipe heat exchanger achieves physical isolation of hot and cold media, and maintenance does not require dealing with cross-contamination of media.
In devices such as fusible metal melting furnaces, air heating furnaces, drying ovens, and hot-pressing molds, this heat exchanger can recover waste heat or provide a stable heat source. Maintenance personnel should check the sealing condition at the connection between the heat pipes and the shell every quarter and clean dust accumulation. Procurement personnel should note that maintenance downtime under such working conditions is usually shorter than the tube bundle extraction inspection of shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
It is recommended to establish a monthly record table of heat pipe vacuum degree and heat exchange temperature difference, and compare historical data of similar equipment to judge performance degradation. Regarding spare parts, heat pipe elements are purchased as needed, and there is no need to keep a full set of sealing gaskets in stock as with plate heat exchangers.
